1901 - 2001

St Eunan's Cathedral was designed by William Hague, F.R.I.A. of Dublin.

It is built of white Mountcharles stone.

The contractor for the first five years was James McClay of Strabane.

The carving contractors were Messrs Purdy and Millard of Belfast.

Because of geographical features of the site it was not possible to orient the church in the traditional manner i.e. with the altar to the east end.

Internal measurements are as follows: length 171 feet;

width at transepts 100 feet;

roof height 72 feet;

spire 240 feet.

Sanctuary and High Altar

The Cathedral was remodelled in 1985, with great care taken to preserve the style and materials of the original altar in the new pieces - the altar table and chair.

The original altar-piece, an Irish carving of Leonardo’s Last Supper, has been incorporated into the new altar.

The Irish made Sanctuary Lamp of solid silver weighs over 1500 ounces. The sanctuary windows themselves are by the Munich firm of Mayer, they represent thirteen scenes from our Lords life.

Over the Sanctuary windows we see representations of Our Lord and the Apostles.

Under the windows and above the pointed arches there are depictions of adoring angels, symbols of the four evangelists, and of the four elements of the world as taught by the ancients.
