The death has taken place of Very Rev. John Canon McGlynn, retired Parish Priest Gortahork on Friday the 27th July 2007 in St Eunan’s Nursing Home, Letterkenny.
Canon McGlynn ws born on the 10th January 1924 in Letterbrick, Cloghan, Co Donegal.
He received his Primary education in Letterbrick National School , Cloghan 1928-1937.   He went to St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny, 1937-1942 for his secondary education, before training for the priesthood in St Patrick's College, Maynooth from 1942-1949.
Father McGlynn was ordained in St Patrick's College, Maynooth, on the 19th June 1949 by Most Rev J.C.McQuaid, DD, Archbishop of Dublin 
Fr McGlynn ministered in Seattle in the U.S. for eight years before returning to his native Diocese in 1957.  His priestly ministry was as follows:

Retired in Gortahork after 50 years of Priestly service.
Canon McGlynn's remains were removed from St Eunan's Nursing Home on Saturday 28th July to The Church of Christ the King, Gortahork.  On Sunday evening at 5pm they were removed from Gortahork to the home of his brother Danny McGlynn, Letterbrick, Cloghan.
On Monday, 30th July at 6.30pm they were removed to the Church of Perpetual Succour, Glenfin.
Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tusday 31st July at 12noon by Most Rev. Séamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry, with a large number of the priests of the diocese concelebrating.  The homily was preached by Rt Rev. Msgr Dan Carr, V.G.
He was buried afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.

Very Rev Patrick Gallagher P.E

The death took place of Fr Patrick Gallagher, Former Parish Priest of Meevagh (Casrrigart), on Good Friday 7th April 2007 in Letterkenny General Hospital.
Fr Patsie was born in Donegal Town on the 18th March 1925.  He received his primary education  at Aodh Rua National School (1930 - 1938).  He then went to St Eunan's College in Lettkenny (1938 - '43) for his secondary education.  He entered St Patrick's College Maynooth in 1943 and was ordained in Maynooth College for his native diocese of Raphoe on the 18th June 1950 by Most Rev. John Charles McQuaid, DD, Archbishop of Dublin.

Fr Gallagher did Postgraduate studies in Maynooth from 1950 - '53 and in the Irish College in Rome from 1953 - '54.

Fr Gallalgher ministered in England for four years before returning to Raphoe in 1958.   His priestly ministry was as follows:

Fr Gallagher's Funeral Mass was celebrated in St John the Baptist Church, Carrigart  on Easter Monday, 9th April at 12noon by Most Rev Philip Boyce OCD, Bishop of Raphoe, assisted by Most Rev Séamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry,  and a large number of Raphoe priests.  He was buried in the adjoining graveyard.

May his soul rest in the peace of the Risen Christ. 
 
 

Very Rev. Augustine McCauley P.E.

The death took place of Fr Augustine McCauley, Former Parish Priest of Ballintra, on Wednesday 25th October 2006 in the Donegal Hospice in Letterkenny, after a short illness.
Fr Gus was born in Kilcar on the 19th November 1923.  He received his primary education  at Fintra National School (1929 - 1938).  He then went to St Eunan's College in Lettkenny (1939 - '43) for his secondary education.  He entered St Patrick's College Maynooth in 1943 and was ordained there for his native diocese of Raphoe on the 19th June 1950 by Most Rev. John Charles McQuaid, DD, Archbishop of Dublin.

Fr McCauley ministered in Scotland for six years before returning to minister in Raphoe.   His priestly ministry was as follows:

His Funeral Mass was celebrated in St Bridgets Church, Ballintra by Mosignor Dan Carr V.G., on Saturday 28th October at 12noon,  and a large number of Raphoe priests.  The homily was preached by the Venerable Archdeacon Patrick McShane P.E.   He was buried in the adjoining graveyard.

Fr Peter McMahon was born in Glasgow on the 21st August 1927.  He received his primary education at Lettershanah and Ballykerrigan National Schools from 1932 - '40.  He studied at  St Eunan's College, Letterkenny (1940 - '45) before going to St Patrick's College, Maynooth where he was ordained by Most Rev. John Charles McQuaide, Archbishop of Dublin on 22nd June 1952.

Fr McMahon served as Diocesan Financial Administrator since 1982.

His Funeral Mass was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenfin on Tuesday 7th February at 12 noon by Most Rev. Philip Boyce OCD, Bishop of Raphoe.  He was assisted by Most Rev. Séamus Hegarty, Bishop of Derry and a large number of Raphoe priests.  

 He was buried in the adjoining graveyard  in his native parish of Glenfin

Very Rev. Eoghan Ó Frighil PP

Fr Eoghan Ó Frighil, Parish Priest of Killymard, died at his home in Derrybeg in his native parish of Gaoth Dobhair on Saturday 5th November 2005.  Fr Ownie was born in Cotten, Derrybeg (Ostán Radharc an Eargail) on the 3rd December 1927.  After Primary education in  Derrybeg and Meenacladdy (1931-1942), he went to St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny (1942-1947) for his secondary education, before training for the priesthood in St Patrick's College, Maynooth from 1947-1954, where he obtained a B.A.  He was ordained in Maynooth on the 20th June 1954 by  Most Rev J.C.McQuaid, DD, Archbishop of Dublin

He also served as Uachtarán Cholaiste Cholmcille, the summer Cullege in Gweedore.   He was in charge of CMAC in the diocese from 1968-'72.

During his time as Administrator in Glenswilly he renovated Parochial House and Church in Glenswilly and initiated a new school.
In Anagaire  he renovated Scoil Náisiúnta Loch an Iubhair.
In Cnoc Fola  he built a new Parochial House and renovated  Colaíste Chnoc Fola and Coláoiste Mín a' Chladaigh anew.
As parish priest of Killymard he built a new Church, new School and new Parochial House and extended Graveyard and improved the surroundings grounds.
He was Director of Local Radio Religious Broadcasting since 1961
He was Editor of a Radio Éireann Religious Programme   from 1958-'69
He contributed to An Sagart Linn on a Panel of Contributors to Telefís Eireann Religious Programmes 1964-'80.
He ws appointed Diocesan Counsellor of Communications in 1961.
He was in charge of Religious programmes on Local Radio.
He contributed to An Timire (Jesuit Magazine to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart) on an issue to issue basis from 1955-1980: - the Questions and Answers section.
Fr Eoghan's Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St Mary's Church, Derrybeg in his native parish of Gaoth Dobhair at 1pm on Tuesday, 8th November, and interred in Magheragallon Cemetery.

Very Rev. Leo Canon Moore PE

 Very Rev. Canon Leo Moore PE died in Letterkenny General Hospital on Friday 25th February 2005 after a short illness.  His remains were removed to his native parish St Conal's Church, Kilclooney on Friday evening, and to St Connell's Church Glenties on Sunday evening.  Requiem Mass on Monday 28th February in Glenties at 12noon followed by burial in Kilclooney Cemetery .

Canon Leo Moore was born on the  9th December 1920 in Narin, Portnoo, Co Donegal.  He studiend at St Eunan's College, Letterkenny and in St Patrick's College, Maynooth where he was ordained to the priesthood  on the 22nd June 1947 by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop of Dublin .  His early years of priestly ministry were on loan to the Southwark Diocese from 1947 until 1956.  

Bishop McNeely of Raphoe recalled him home to his native Diocese of Raphoe in September 19565.

Very Rev. Dermot Canon Britton P.E.

.Canon Dermot Britton died in Sligo General Hospital on Friday 7th January 2005 after a short illness.  His remains were taken to St Patrick's Church, Ballyshannon on Saturday 8th and reposed there on Sunday and Monday until his Funeral Mass was celebrated by Most Rev. Philip Boyce OCD, Bishop of Raphoe, and thirty priests on Monday the 10th.  Bishop Boyce also officiated at his interment in St Agatha's Cemetery in Clar.

Hugh Dermot Britton was born to Fergus Britton and Mary McCauley in Donegal Town on the 20th July 1917.  He attended Aodh Ruadh National School and St Eunan's College, Letterkenny.  He studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College Maynooth and was ordained there by His Grace Most Rev. John Charles McQuaid on the 21st June 1942.  He went immediatley on loan to the Pymmouth Diocese in Cornwall and worked in Camborne, Falmouth and St Mawes Parish.

Bishop McNeely recalled him to his native diocese in October 1954 and appointed him curate in Mountcharles. In January 1962 he was appointed curate in Stranolar until he was transferred to Convoy in September 1969.  While curate in Convoy he built the new church of St Mary's.  He was appointed Parish Priest of Meevagh (Carrigart) in November 1973 and was transferred to Ballyshannon as Parish Priest of Kilbarron in February 1979.  He was made a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1987.  He retired to Bundoran in September 1996.

Father Jimmy Shiels P.P.

Fr James (Jimmy) Shiels, Parish Priest of Burtonport, died at his home in Acres, Burtonport, on Saturday 14th August 2004, after a long illness.   

Fr Jimmy was born on the 3rd March 1949 in Nelson Street, Derry.  He was educated at St Columb’s College, Derry and received his training for the priesthood in St Patrick's College, Carlow .  He was ordained on the 9th June 1973 (Feast of St Colmcille) in the St Columba's Church of the Long Tower , Derry , for the Diocese of   Motherwell , Scotland , by Bishop Neil Farren.  

He ministered in the the Diocese of Motherwell until 1978.  From Autumn 1978, Fr Jimmy served as a priest in various parishes of the Diocese of Raphoe:

  • Milford St Peter’s 1978 – 1980
  • Stranorlar 1980-1982
  • Ardara 1982-1986
  • Drumkeen 1986-1992  , on Tory Island 1988/89
  • Arranmore Island 1992 - 1997.
  • In 1998 he was appointed CC to Kilclooney.
  • He worked as Parish Priest in Burtonport from February 2000.

After his active life as priest and devotee to Our Lady, he died after a long illness on the Eve of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, 14th August, 2004 , in the Parochial House Burtonport.  

He is being waked in St Columba’s Church, Burtonport, from 1pm on 15th August.  Concelebrated funeral Mass in St Columba’ on Tuesday, 17th August, 2004 , at 12 noon .  Burial afterwards in the adjacent church grounds.

Mgr Andrew Carriban  P.E.

Monsignor Andrew Carriban died in Donegal Town Community Hospital on Good Shephard Sunday, 2nd May 2004, after a short illness.  He was in his 66th year of priestly ministry.  His funeral Mass was celebrated by Most Rev. Dr Philip Boyce, Bishop of Raphoe,  in his native Frosses on Tuesday 4th May, assisted by the Bishop of Derry, Most Rev. Seamus Hegarty, and concelebrated by over sixty priests.   He was immediately afterwards laid to rest at St Agatha's Church, Clar, Donegal.

Mgr Andy was born in the townland of Drimatumpher, Frosses on the 2nd September 1912.  He was educated at Frosses N.S. and at St Eunan's College, Letterkenny (1926 - 1931).   He studied for the priesthood in St Patrick's College, Maynooth where he was ordained on the 19th June 1938 by Most Rev. Dr Wall, Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin.

After Ordination Fr Andy went to the Irish College in Rome where he studied for a Licence and a Doctorate in Canon Law .  His first priestly assignment was in the Diocese of Monterey, Fresno, California from 1941 - 1949.  He then returned to his native diocese of Raphoe and was assigned to the Staff of St Eunan's College, Letterkenny.   He spent 27 years at St Eunan's, serving as Spiritual Director, Bursar and Teacher.  In 1966 he was appointed Administrator of St Eunan's Cathedral in Letterkenny.  

In 1972 Dr Carriban was appointed to Killybegs where he served as Parish Priest until 1976 when he was appointed Parish Priest of the Parish of Townawilly, Donegal Town.  In 1978 he was made a prelate of honour.  In 1989 he stepped down as parish priest of Townawilly and moved to Clar where he served another seven years as assistant priest.  He retired in 1995  and moved back to live in his native Frosses.  In 1998 he was appointed Archdeacon of the Cathedral Chapter.

 Eteranl Rest grant unto him O Lord.

Very Rev. Patrick Canon Cunningham P.E.  

Bruckless.

Canon Patrick Cunningham died at his home in St John's Point in Bruckless on the 12th August 2002.  His Requem Mass was celebrated by Bishop Philip Boyce in St Conal's Church, Bruckless on the 15h August, assisted by 20 priests of the Diocese.

Patrick Cunningham was born in New York in 1914,  and returned home to St John's Point with his parents as an infant.  He went to  St Eunan's College, Letterkenny  in 1930 after which he went to Salamanca in Spain where he studied philosophy for two years.  He studied Theology at St Patrick's College Maynooth where was ordained on the 23rd June 1940.  

His first appointment was as a curate in the diocese of Denby in Edinburgh in Scotland.  On returning to Ireland in 1954 he was served as Spiritual Director at St Eunan's College for two years.    He was then appointed curate in Ballyshannon for nine years from 1956 to 1967. During his time there he became involved in the local drama society who still have fond memories of him. In 1967 he was moved to Dungloe where he worked as a curate and was deeply involve with the local community up until  1973.  In 1973 he returned to his native Bruckless where he became the local curate.  In 1979 he was appointed the first post-reformation Parish Priest of Killtaghee, Bruckless.   He served as Parish Priest of  Bruckless unti his retirement in 1991.  He was appointed a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in 1987

May he rest with the Risen Lord.
